What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry includes treatments to help you relax or even sleep during dental appointments and procedures. While some dentists use medicine or nitrous oxide — commonly known as laughing gas — to help you relax during your dental appointments, the team at Beyond Dentistry offers NuCalm®, a drug-free alternative to conventional sedation dentistry services.

What is NuCalm®?

NuCalm® combines four techniques to stimulate your natural relaxation pathways.

  • Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) supplement

  • Cranial electrotherapy stimulation (CES)

  • Music with binaural beats

  • Light-blocking glasses

GABA is a nutrient that helps your brain relax and shuts down activities as you prepare to sleep. However, when you’re stressed or anxious, your brain doesn’t respond to GABA normally. However, the CES device opens your GABA receptors and stimulates serotonin, which also helps you relax and sleep.

At the same time, you wear headphones and listen to music that includes binaural beats. Binaural beats send different rhythmic signals into each ear, which slows your brainwaves from rapid, anxious activity to the slower speeds that encourage sleep. The light-blocking glasses also help you relax.

What are the benefits of NuCalm®?

NuCalm®is a drug-free sedation alternative, which reduces many of the risks associated with traditional sedation. You also won’t feel groggy after your appointment, so you can drive and get back to your regular activities immediately. In fact, you should feel refreshed and alert after your treatment.

Am I a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

  • Many patients benefit from sedation dentistry. If you or a member of your family has dental anxiety — as many as 15% of American adults do — and are avoiding the dentist because of fear, you’re putting yourself at risk of a wide range of dental problems, including tooth decay, gum disease, and tooth loss. You can opt for sedation dentistry to help you alleviate your fears and anxieties about dental care.

  • Sedation dentistry is also helpful for children and patients with special needs who either can’t sit still during dental treatments or don’t have the verbal communication skills to talk to their dentists.
